![]() ![]() In a 2005 interview with NPR, for example, Holmes’ voice goes through some noticeable shifts. However, people have long speculated that Holmes was amping things up for the cameras and social situations-and sometimes, there appeared to be an occasional slip-up. ![]() Apparently, most people in the Holmes family, including her grandmother, had deep voices. Research has shown that women who speak with deeper voices are typically taken more seriously, viewed as more competent and trustworthy overall-so it’s no surprise that someone like Holmes might mask her true voice in an attempt to make connections in the medical industry.Īccording to family members who spoke to TMZ in 2019, Holmes’ voice isn’t fake. Why did Elizabeth Holmes change her voice?įor Holmes, using a deep voice was a way of presenting herself as a powerful woman in a space often occupied by men. But at the end of the day, I’m an actor and I’m not her and I did my best to try to capture the oddness of it.” “So I am a little worried about what people are going to say about the voice. “And that was really my only concern,” she continued. While Seyfriend doesn’t think she “nailed it 100%” for Hulu’s series on the disgraced Theranos founder, she does feel confident in having done what she “needed to do for the audience to come with us” along for the journey. So even though she was deepening her voice more and more to what we all understand is for power’s sake, to make an impact, I still couldn’t get all the way there.” But in terms of the depth of it, I had to work really hard to get there because I speak at such a higher level than she does naturally. “And that’s my job as an actor, mimicking and stuff like that. “The shape of my mouth isn’t the same as hers, but I can make sounds somewhat or pretty close to what she did,” Seyfried told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in March 2022, per Variety. Still, Seyfried says she did her best to “try to capture the oddness” of Holmes’ voice-even if she didn’t nail it completely. ![]() And just not fun.” She added, “I was so worried that getting the voice 100 percent right would distract from the actual story, that it would become the focus.” “Besides, I promised I wasn’t going to give myself a hard time and try to completely mimic this other human being. “I knew my voice was never going to be as deep as hers because I’m physically not capable of it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2022. For Seyfried, who plays Holmes in the new Hulu series The Dropout, tapping into Holmes’ voice was an important part of her story but she also knew there were obvious limitations when it came to mimicking it herself. These rare slip-ups led people in her circle and the media to question her authenticity-especially as the Theranos ruse was beginning to unravel in the 2010s. ![]() But on occasion, the medical entrepreneur slipped up and returned to her natural speaking voice, which happened to be more high-pitched. With Theranos, Holmes boasted a revolutionary technology that was capable of diagnosing a number of diseases, including cancer, with just a prick of blood. The Dropout, which stars Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes, tells the story of the former Theranos CEO’s meteoric rise-and equally intense fall from grace-after she is accused of defrauding medical professionals and companies out of millions. If you then call on your DRAFT object, that’s where things get funky. Meaning, you can have a DRAFT containing just a plain text part, or you can have a DRAFT containing just an HTML part, or you can have a DRAFT containing both HTML and plain text parts. If you call and you pass in just a “plain text” part or just an HTML part, then the DRAFT will get created properly with just the part you specified. You can only do this though, if you have OAuth access to the recipient’s Gmail account. If you choose not to “send” an email, but instead to “insert” the email into someone’s Inbox via the API method, then you can set completely different HTML and Text parts and Gmail won’t alter them at all.The better approach would be to sanitize the email, then write it to the user’s “Sent Mail” folder, and simultaneously transmit the email. This is likely a flaw in the API, where it mistakenly writes the email to the user’s “Sent Mail” folder before sanitizing and sending the email. This can fool even the most experienced developer, so it’s important that you don’t rely on what’s in your “Sent Mail” folder as proof of the email that was actually sent. In example #3 above, if you set your own Plain Text part, the “Sent Mail” email will show your HTML parts and Plain Text parts just as you constructed them for the Gmail API, but again, the actual received email will have a different Plain Text part that was auto-generated by Gmail from your HTML part. In example #2 above, if you try to do this, the “Sent Mail” email will show just an HTML part, but the actual received email will have both HTML and Plain Text parts. Lastly, it’s important to know that the message that appears in your account’s “Sent Mail” folder is not the same message that is sent to the receiver. The actual Plain Text part that gets sent will say, “hello there.” Let’s say you construct your email with an HTML part that looks like “hello there” and a Plain Text part that looks like “hi there.” (Notice that one part says “hello,” and the other says “hi.”) When the Gmail API sends your email, your Plain Text part will be wiped out and replaced with a part that is converted from your HTML part. Setting individual HTML and Plain Text parts when constructing your RFC message is useless because the Gmail API will override the Plain Text part with its own Plain Text part, using the HTML part as its basis. If you try to do this, the API will accept the message, but behind the scenes, it will convert your “text/html” part to a “text/plain” part and add that to the message before it sends the email. ![]() You cannot send just an HTML email with the Gmail API, meaning you cannot send a “text/html” part without a corresponding “text/plain” part. ![]()

Synthetic or acrylic brushes are recommended for water-based interior paints and these will last for years when looked after correctly. How To Clean Paint Brushes After Using Water-based Paint ![]() Tip: When painting only dip the top two inches of the paintbrush into the paint, the less unneeded painted on the brush the easier it is to clean afterwards. Step 5: Collect the used solvent/paint thinner into one sealable container and contact your local council to find out how to dispose of it responsibly. After rinsing blot the brushes onto paper towels or old newspapers and leave to dry. The brushes can now be rinsed in warm soapy water. Step 4: Using gloves squeeze the excess thinner out of the bristles of the brush into the container. This can be done by hand or with the help of a mechanical paint brush spinner. Step 3: Spin the paintbrush to remove excess thinner. Repeat until no more colour comes out of the brush. Place your brushes in the solvent and allow to soak for 5 minutes, working it through the bristles of the brush by dipping and pumping them in the solvent repeatedly. Step 2: Using a strong plastic or metal container, half-fill with white spirits. A wire paint comb is a handy tool for removing paint from brushes also, just comb through the paintbrush over the paint pot. You can do this by applying the excess to the surface you’re painting, by scraping the paint off the brush onto the rim of the paint container and/or using an old cloth or paper towel to remove the remainder. Step 1: Remove as much paint as possible from your brush when you’re finished. Avoid using the same brushes for oil-based paints and water-based paints. Natural bristle brushes are best suited for painting with oil-based products on furniture or woodwork. Using the right brush for the job makes maintaining your brushes easier. You can check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best solvent to use. ![]() You’ll need a paint thinner like white spirits or turpentine to clean your brushes properly. If you’ve been using your brush for oil-based paint, varnish or lacquer, soap and water alone is not going to cut it. When coming back to the task, simply unwrap your brush and you’re good to go.Ĩ Related posts: How To Clean Paint Brushes After Using Oil-based Paint You can then store it someplace cool for up to two days or even longer in the freezer. This can be a ziplock bag, clingfilm or a plastic bag sealed with masking tape. If you’re not finished using the brush for this painting task, you can avoid cleaning it and instead store the paintbrush by wrapping it in tightly sealed plastic. Tip: A stitch in time saves nine the sooner you clean your brushes after use the better. The steps outlined here will help you to clean your paintbrushes like a professional, maintain their quality and extend their lifespan when using both oil and water-based paints. Investing in good brushes means less work for you and better value for money in the long run, but there’s little point in buying a better brush unless you clean it and store it properly after use. A good quality paintbrush holds more paint, distributes it more evenly on the surface and won’t leave you picking out loose bristles from your new coat of paint. ![]() ![]() ![]() A monogram stitched on a towel looks AMAZING stitched in cotton.įor the very detailed machine embroidery designs, rayon and polyester work best. Cotton embroidery thread tends to be thicker which is why it tends to fill in shapes nicely. Typically I design and stitch out simpler machine embroidery designs, so for this, cotton machine embroidery thread is most appropriate. I like the thickness and the way it fills. It does not break easily and, like the rayon thread, is very shiny. Polyester is the toughest of the machine embroidery thread types. Rayon is the most popular, is shinier than cotton and not quite as thick. Cotton is the thickest and fills in the most. There are essentially three different types: cotton, rayon and polyester. It took me quite a while to learn differences between all of the different types of embroidery thread. This bobbin thread is thinner than the embroidery thread and the unbalance of weight is what keeps your bobbin thread from showing on the top of your design. However, with machine embroidery, you should use bobbin thread specifically designed for machine embroidery. I would have to invest in thread specifically for machine embroidery! And I would need a lot of it – especially if I wanted to create embroidered photorealistic effects. But, I quickly learned that I should not use this type of thread on my embroidery machine. When I was first getting started, I owned tons of sewing machine thread. Thread is EVERYTHING when you do machine embroidery because it is the primary ingredient in your craft. Thread is thread is thread, right? One of the particular advantages of subtitling over dubbing is the potential for incidental acquisition of FL vocabulary. However, because of the limitations of those studies, it is difficult to reach any more definitive conclusions. Overall, the first few studies on the processing of subtitles do indicate that viewers spend some of the presentation time looking at the subtitle area. The number of participants in that 1989 study was reported (12 in each experiment) however, the other methodological limitations mentioned above remain problematic. In a study with children from Grades 2 to 6, D'Ydewalle and van Rensbergen ( Reference D'Ydewalle, van Rensbergen, Mandl and Levin1989) found that the children also spent time looking in the subtitle area, and interestingly, this practice varied depending on the type of film: less time was spent in the subtitle area for an action film. Unfortunately, the descriptions of these two studies lack many methodological details (e.g., the number of participants, the language background of the participants, and the number of subtitles used in the study). However, another study found that participants spent 30% of the subtitle's presentation time looking in the subtitle area (D'Ydewalle, van Rensbergen, & Pollet, Reference D'Ydewalle, van Rensbergen, Pollet, O'Regan and Levy-Schoen1987). ![]() In an initial study, D'Ydewalle, Muylle, and van Rensbergen ( Reference D'Ydewalle, Muylle, van Rensbergen, Groner, McConkie and Menz1985) found that participants fixated upon one or two words per subtitle, leading them to conclude that not much reading of the subtitles occurred. They used eye tracking to measure the amount of time a viewer spent looking in the subtitle area as a function of the subtitle's presentation time with standard subtitles. Some studies in the 1980s investigated the allocation of attention to the different sources of information in this multimodal situation. Furthermore, the information coming from these different sources may be redundant, which can render the reading of the subtitles less compelling. When watching a film with subtitles, a viewer has to process not only three sources of information (the soundtrack, the subtitles, and the dynamic images in the film), but also the multilingual situation with both FL and native language. Nowadays, it is often possible to add subtitles in different languages to films or television programs at the press of a button. This is called standard subtitling, and it is often preferred to dubbing as it is cheaper and keeps the original voice of the actors, thus avoiding the issue of lip synchronicity (Koolstra, Peeters, & Spinhof, Reference Koolstra, Peeters and Spinhof2002). Finally, the reading of the subtitles is discussed in relation to the saliency of subtitles and automatic reading behavior.Īn increasing number of films are imported from abroad and broadcast in the original foreign language (FL) soundtrack with subtitles added in the native language. Because the results showed no vocabulary acquisition, the need for more sensitive measures of vocabulary acquisition are discussed. To investigate the incidental acquisition of FL vocabulary, participants also completed an unexpected auditory vocabulary test. However, participants exhibited more regular reading of the subtitles when the film soundtrack was in an unknown FL. The results revealed that participants read the subtitles irrespective of the subtitling condition. In this study, participants watched part of a film under standard (FL soundtrack and native language subtitles), reversed (native language soundtrack and FL subtitles), or intralingual (FL soundtrack and FL subtitles) subtitling conditions while their eye movements were recorded. However, the extent to which people process subtitles under different subtitling conditions remains unclear. ![]() Foreign language (FL) films with subtitles are becoming increasingly popular, and many European countries use subtitling as a cheaper alternative to dubbing. ![]() |
